JMMB Group ‘Shares the Love’ with Public Servants

17 February 2019

Love was in the air last week, as JMMB Group took the time to share some love with select public servants at a brief handover, held on February 13, at its New Kingston-based head office, as part of its Share the Love initiative.

The occasion was used to present four public servants namely: Sergeant Andrew Shaw of York Park Fire Station, Corporal Andrew Williams of Community Safety and Security Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF), Shannon Bowden, Critical Care Nurse at Victoria Jubilee Hospital and Danva Duncan, Grade 6 teacher at Mountain View Primary.

These recipients were shortlisted by their respective associations and the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation Conversations for Greatness project, which is a transformational leadership initiative rolled out across over eighty schools in Jamaica.

Stephenie Lugg-Lawrence, senior corporate manager, JMMB Investments and Digital Services outlined, “Each year during the ‘Week of Love,’ JMMB seeks to share love by engaging in random acts of kindness or recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless love for others. As such, this year, we sought to recognize public servants because although these individuals are the backbone of the public sector, their contribution is often underappreciated, and so JMMB Group decided to share some love with them.”  The individuals selected were chosen based on their excellence in carrying out their duties and their own demonstration of love for others, through their personal involvement in outreach activities.

Going Beyond the Call of Duty
Sergeant Shaw, is a testament of the firefighters prayer, “...give me strength to save a life whatever be its age,” as he risked his life to save others while engaging in a rescue of a resident of Norman Lane who was trapped in an abandoned 15 foot soak away pit, containing water and other debris.

Equally keen to save lives and go beyond the call of duty are Corporal Williams and Nurse Bowden. As evidence of this, Williams, as a member of the community safety and security team, works alongside other police officers to mentor at-risk youths. Always seeking to brighten someone’s day, Corporal Williams, can also be found on a monthly basis engaging in random acts of kindness, whether it is paying the grocery bill for an unsuspecting shopper or giving of his time to help others; with the mission to take this movement across Jamaica and impact as many lives as possible.  It is no wonder with such a selfless heart that he was also nominated for the LASCO Police Officer of the Year 2018-2019 award. Similarly, Nurse Bowden is known for her always ready attitude to volunteer for a range of outreach activities organized by the Nurses Association of Jamaica (NAJ), or spread some love with the children at various homes, at annual treats organized with her family members.

With a transformational mindset and a drive to make a difference, Danva Duncan, has endeared himself to his colleagues and students by looking beyond one’s current circumstances and into each heart. Putting his students first, he regularly supports his students who may not be able to attend school due to financial challenges, by providing lunch; in addition, he for years, provided free extra classes with snacks on Sundays, for students who need additional assistance. Additionally, he is a resident advisor at Mico University, providing guidance and counsel to the young men.

The initiative is in keeping with JMMB’s vision to assist individuals to unearth the greatness in those around them thereby enriching the lives of others and their community.
