JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation Donates Computers for Homework Centre for At-Risk Children
JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation recently partnered with Tank-Weld Group to support at-risk children in the often volatile community of Waterhouse, by donating 15 computers to re-equip the Fi-Wi Homework Centre in the area. The centre, which is operated with the support of Tank-Weld Metals, is designed to provide a safe-haven for the children while catering to their academic needs through access to homework assistance, computer and internet access, in addition to serving as a hub for social services for community members.
The donation was made to the FiWi Homework Centre in keeping with the Foundation’s commitment to empowering youth through education and in a bid to bridge the digital divide. Additionally, the JMMB Joan Duncan Foundation hopes that this donation will foster continued integration of technology in education by catering to the varying learning styles of students and encouraging critical thinking skills and independent learning.
The Foundation has also supported similar initiatives such as: the ‘One Laptop or Tablet Per Child’ with a donation of 400 tablets. This initiative was spearheaded by the Ministry of Education and Youth through its agency, the National Education Trust (NET) and Junior Achievement Jamaica during the pandemic.
