PSOJ & JMMB Group Economic Forum to tackle the impact of global uncertainties on Jamaican Businesses

21 July 2017

The present global economic climate has been marred by uncertainties, which have become apparent in the manifestation of policy reformations, political confrontations, scandals and departures from long-standing treaties/agreement resulting in much discomfort on a local, regional and international level.

In response to the potential implications for the Jamaican economy and business community, the Private Sector Organization of Jamaica (PSOJ) and partner, the JMMB Group, is to host its annual economic forum themed, “Global Expectations: Predicting Economic Trends in an uncertain Global Environment – implications for Jamaican Companies,” on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel, beginning at 8 a.m.

McKinsey & Company’s partner and lead researcher on digitization, competition and the impact of multinational companies on the global economy, Mr. Sree Ramaswamy, who will deliver the main address, will explore the current economic reality of this era, the future outlook and the impacts on Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. Mr. Ramaswamy has extensive experience in technology, trade and investment and the global and US economic outlook.

According to Dennis Chung PSOJ CEO, “the (PSOJ) membership and Jamaicans at large are in an apprehensive state following the happenings on the global scene.” He noted that the outcome of the US presidential race as well as the intended changes in policies, the crises being experienced in Venezuela and the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union has compounded the uneasiness being felt in relation to the possible impact on Jamaican companies. In light of these economic trends, he added, the forum is timely as it provides a further opportunity to carefully monitor global activities that can help the country alleviate the impact of negative externalities and gain insight and input from the relevant experts. Other speakers on the occasion will include panelists Dennis Chung, PSOJ CEO, and Jermaine Burrell, Group Research Manager at JMMB. Senator the Hon. Kamina Johnson-Smith, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade will also bring greetings.

Kerry-Ann Stimpson, Chief Group Marketing Manager at JMMB notes, “JMMB is pleased to once again partner with the PSOJ to host another year’s staging of the PSOJ/JMMB Annual Economic Forum which has, over the years, afforded an important avenue for key decision makers, opinion leaders, and members of the business and academia fraternity to engage in high level discussions and in-depth analysis of the Jamaican economy, the impact of business operations in Jamaica and the way forward towards achieving sustainable economic growth and development.”

Additionally, the forum aims to provide an avenue to formulate strategic plans and practical solutions that will enhance the business community.
